Reno City Views 3, the train trench project Preliminary work began in 2002 for the 2.1 mile $282 million Reno Transportation Rail Access Corridor (ReTRAC), a massive project to lay the Union Pacific train tracks in a 33-foot deep trench through downtown Reno from Keystone to Wells Avenue. The first part of the project was moving utility lines away from the present tracks followed by construction of the temporary shoofly tracks (the first trains rolled on the shoofly April 13, 2004) and finally trench construction at the site of the old tracks. The first trains rolled in the trench in November, 2005, and removal of the shoofly completed the project in 2006. The trench eliminated 11 at-grade crossings in the city. See the Landmarks 2 page for earlier pictures of the Amtrak depot, the Turf Club, and The Freight House. | Use the Show link for a slideshow of 800x600 images on this page |

The shoofly runs down the middle of Commercial Row, seen here from Sierra Street. The present tracks (and the trench) are dual rail lines but the shoofly is only one line. The temporary tracks run within a few feet of Fitzgeralds valet parking entrance. |

The shoofly opened April 13, 2004 and Amtrak passengers began using the temporary depot east of Lake Street. The last picture shows the permanent depot which is closed for trench construction on the far side of the building. The shoofly is south of the depot and the trench is going in on the north side. |

The Freight House and the Men's Club, old railroad buildings near the temporary depot. The chain-link fence in the first picture surrounds a test hole to check for water leakage. Parts of the trench are below water level and will be surrounded by up to six feet of concrete. |
