I usually don't drive to Vegas during the winter because of the possible icy roads but this winter I made several trips due to a family emergency. This picture, just south of Goldfield on Highway 95, was taken on February 17, 2009, after a light snowfall. The temperature was about 40 degrees but the road was clear and dry and there was very little traffic. More pictures like this on the Southern Nevada 1 page.
Taken from Nevada Highway 159, Blue Diamond Road, as it skirts the edge of Red Rock Canyon. It's February 19, 2009, and a beautiful winter day in Las Vegas, about 70 degrees. You can see a few flakes of snow at the top of the hills. This picture is from the Clark County page.
Rhyolite is my favorite ghost town because it's so easy to get to. About 4 miles west of Beatty on Highway 374 and paved road all the way. This picture, taken January 12, 2009, shows the Rhyolite train station built in 1906. On the hillside approaching the ghost town is the Goldwell Open Air Museum (which can be considered a ghost museum), and a fantastic addition to visiting Rhyolite.
Nevada Highway 95 between Reno and Las Vegas is 400 miles of open plateau desert with a small town about every 100 miles. The elevation is 4,500 feet in Reno and as you drive south the road tops out at 6,030 feet in Tonopah and drops to 2,020 feet in Las Vegas. This picture, taken south of Hawthorne on January 12, 2009, is from the Tonopah page.
This is the Red Rock Canyon Latenight Trailhead just off Highway 160 on January 11, 2009. The canyon is only a few miles from the Las Vegas strip and you can see the top of the Stratosphere Tower extending over the hill. More Red Rock pictures on the Clark County page.
The Mountain Falls master-planned golf community at the southern edge of Pahrump is 45 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. The lush landscaping of the 1,050-acre community is in sharp contrast to the dry sagebrush just outside its boundaries. On this day, June 9, 2009, my Mom and I walked to the sidewalk in front of the clubhouse to get some pictures. More photos in Southern Nevada 3.
I was driving from the Las Vegas airport on January 28, 2009, trying to find the road back to Pahrump. Instead of getting on the freeway I found myself on a city street, and I took this picture from the Jeep just by chance at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana. This picture is from the Clark County page.
The City of Reno opened the Whitewater Kayak Park on the Truckee River downtown in 2004. The makeover at the river has been a boon for kayakers, swimmers and businesses along the River Walk. In the background is the Riverside Hotel, built in 1927 but remodeled for artist's lofts residences in 2000. More pictures in Truckee River 3.
This picture was taken February 19, 2009, from a scenic view rest stop on Highway 159 outside the boundaries of Red Rock Canyon. For a winter day it was perfect weather, about 70 degrees, but those dry hillsides look like 100 degree temperatures and rattlesnakes to me. Blue Diamond Road, Highway 159, connects to Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas where my Mom had a doctor's appointment. This picture is from the Clark County page.
Fisherman's Park winds along the Truckee River east of downtown Reno. October 29, 2007, was a perfect day for fall colors and I was on my way home from the DMV after registering my Jeep. I don't make very many specific trips to take pictures, and I don't like fighting crowds or traffic, but I do carry my camera everywhere so I can take spur-of-the-moment snapshots like this.
Leaving Tonopah heading south on February 17, 2009, next stop Goldfield, about 25 miles. And keep the headlights on for the next 144 miles. The speed limit is 70 mph but it's a good two lane road without much traffic and it's usually easy to pass slower vehicles. More pictures on the Tonopah page.
Approaching Tonopah on February 17, 2009, after 100 miles of empty desert. Tonopah has an elevation of 6,030 feet and if you encounter snow anywhere between Reno and Las Vegas it's going to be here. Brock Mountain, second peak to the right of the road and nicknamed Signal Hill, is communications central for a vast desert area in Central Nevada. The first hill to the right of the road is Heller Butte and the highest peak on the right is Mt. Butler at 7,185 feet. More pictures on the Tonopah page.

| There are two versions of the printed calendar available in the online store. The small version, 8.5x11 inches, displays the natural pictures shown above. The oversize calendar, 17x11 inch pictures, features painted or sketched images as shown here. The effect is subtle but with the large images it makes the view for the month much more interesting.
