Pictures taken with a 12-meg Canon G9 with an original jpg resolution of 4000x3000 |
February 17, 2009, driving south on Nevada Highway 95 near Mina. I thought this was an interesting view with the clouds swirling around the mountain peak. The desolate high desert area between Reno and Las Vegas has many views like this. More pictures in Southern Nevada 1.
The Reno Arch May 12, 2010. The white lights on the Arch are newly installed LED's that use less energy. You can see the edge of the Fitzgerald's sign at the right side of the picture. Fitzgerald's was closed when this picture was taken but someone turned the lights back on so the property looks like it's open. This picture is from Reno Arch 3 and also take a look at Downtown Reno Timeline.
| This was the last spot to fill when I chose 12 pictures for the calendar and I decided on this one because of the lonely Wal-Mart truck 200 miles from any Wal-Mart store. There is a distribution center in Reno and the company must run a supply route to southern Nevada. I see several Wal-Mart trucks heading south everytime I drive to Pahrump. | Circus Circus opened May 3, 1978 with 104 rooms, a casino, circus-arcade and the 100-foot tall Topsy the Clown standing at the corner of Fifth and Virginia Streets. The sign has undergone several updates and renovations since then, and during windstorms the intersection is known to be closed due to possible flying debris from a wounded clown. This picture, taken March 31, 2010, is from the Uptown 1 page. |
The Goldwell Open Air Museum sits at the base of the hill next to the ghost town of Rhyolite four miles west of Beatty. Most of the desert art dates from 1984 when the late artist Albert Szukalski created the Last Supper sculptures. More pictures on the Rhyolite page.
A windy day in Reno May 3, 2010. I finally got a polarizing filter for my camera that enhances the sky and clouds. I see the shape of a 747 in that cloud, don't you? The tall buildings at the left side of the picture at the foot of the snow-capped mountains are the Atlantis and Peppermill. More photos in Uptown 2.
The new Reno Aces Ballpark opened April 17, 2009, and a year later an entertainment area with bars and restaurants was added. The neon baseball player, about 20 feet tall, adorns the outside corner of one of the restaurants and overlooks the park. I combined two pictures to create this image of a player who can't wait to play ball. This picture is from Renovation 2.
This 1912 grammar school in Yerington has been restored as the Jeanne Dini Cultural Center. The street that leads to the 100-year-old school gives a perfect view from the main part of town, and this picture, taken late in the afternoon on June 20, 2010, highlights the beautiful colors of the building and shrubs. More Yerington pictures in Central Nevada 1.
Marina Park in Sparks has picnic areas, two swimming beaches, volleyball courts, boating, scuba diving and a lighted trail system. It's a popular spot for jogging. The park was created in the late 1990's from the Helms Gravel Pit next to Interstate 80 and parts of the lake are up to 120 feet deep. This picture was taken May 26, 2010, and the mountains are still covered with snow. The peak on the left is Mt. Rose. More photos like this in Area Parks 2.
Downtown Reno at Fourth and Virginia Streets, 8:00 PM, March 31, 2010, getting a tattoo. No not me, I was the guy with the camera. Downtown has many convenience stores, souvenir shops, fast food outlets and pawn shops sprinkled around the big casinos on Virginia Street. More photos like this in Uptown 1.
Raymond (Pappy) Smith commissioned this mural in 1949 to depict the struggle of the early pioneers settling the West. The original mural featured a lighted waterfall and flickering campfire. It adorned the outside of Harolds Club until 1999 and was restored in 2005 at the Livestock Events Center. More pictures in Landmarks 4 and also take a look at Downtown Reno Timeline.
Approaching Walker Lake on Nevada Highway 95 March 10, 2010. The community of Walker Lake is at the foot of Mt. Grant. The lake north of Hawthorne was once part of an inland sea that defines the Great Basin. More pictures on the Central Nevada 2 page.
